Miles Amherst Junior Progress Trophy for the Junior member who has made most progress during the year - Michael Blake

Michael has continued to develop his playing skills with the Band despite the inconvenience of having braces fitted to his top and bottom teeth. During the summer he capably moved from baritone to 2nd Euphonium to provide maternity cover for Julia Edgeworth-Simmonds and ensured that our principal euphonium, Martin Warner, was well supported during this period. He has now returned to 2nd baritone where he continues to play to a high standard.

Fred Poole Memorial Cup for the Musician of the year - John Warner

John is one of those great examples for all. Since his retirement he has thrown himself into various hobbies, one of which was a decision to take up the trombone and not only that the biggest of the lot, the bass trombone. He has honed his playing skills in the very short time of just over 5 years and has developed into a very competent trombone player that definitely adds to the band sound. He regularly attends British Trombone Society events and various brass summer schools to keep learning. He also provides the source for several amusing instances due to his deafness and is happy to accept the humour and often the blame for others mistakes with good grace!

Jeff Clarke Cup awarded to the Band Member of the Year - Martin Cullwick

Martin originally came along to the Band to bring his son George along to learn how to play. He eventually gave in and joined the Training Band on trombone before progressing up to the Senior Band along with George. He is an invaluable part of the trombone section adding a solid and powerful 2nd trombone sound. He also works tirelessly behind the scenes for the Band using his craftsmans skills to creatie practice rooms at our new band room, poles to hang curtains on and much more. He does all this whilst supporting his family and must forever be out and about taking one of his children to some event or other.

Francis Martin Memorial Cup for the Section of the Year - Back Row Cornets

One of the engine room sections of the brass band is the Back Row Cornet section. The parts they play are often underrated but essential to the good sound of any band. The additional harmonies they add can bring a piece of music to life.

Our back row consists of several hard working youngsters who have progressed up from the Training Band and are now making their mark in the Senior Band (Grace Windsor, Katie Travers & Megan Taylor) and several banding stalwarts who are showing them the way (Mark Windsor & Kev P), topped off by the magnificent soprano sound of Kev Bennett.

Dave Crowe Memorial Cup for the Cornet Player of the Year - Helen Walters

Helen works tirelessly for the Band in many roles: Principal Cornet, Training Band Leader, Committee Member, etc. She has developed into a top class cornet player over the years and regularly impresses our audiences by playing solos from memory. During the summer she displayed her technique with 'Trumpet Triplets' and 'Fiesta Mexicana', and at the Christmas concert she played 'Lonely This Christmas' beautifully. Helen leads the cornet section well and ensures that they all know exactly what they should be doing.

She also runs the Training Band and has built up a strong future for the Band with all her work with the young and the not so young. On top of this she also acts as the administrator for the Gloucestershire Youth Brass Band and is a peripatetic teacher for the Gloucestershire Music Service. She successfully organised the GYBB trip to Paris in the summer and has organised numerous courses and events during the year for brass players around the County. She proves an inspiration to many and long may this continue.
