A Youth Band and a Civic Parade
It was a mad dash but we made it! On the weekend of 7th-8th October, several members of Tewkesbury Town Band were involved either as players or helpers with the Gloucestershire Youth Brass Band and its Training Band. The Band were pleased to be represented by Oliver Moss (Solo Cornet) and Hannah Williams (3rd Cornet) in the Gloucestershire Youth Brass Band, and by William Norman (Cornet), Grace Windsor (Cornet), Becky Musto (Horn) and Cameron Purveur (trombone) in the Training Band. Helping with the Training Band and administration were Helen & Hadrian Walters and Mark Windsor. A fuller review of the weekends events can be found on the GBBA website at www.gbbaonline.org .
Luckily, the weekends event were being held in Tewkesbury School which meant that the three helpers were able to dash into Tewkesbury town centre to play with the Band as it led the Civic Parade from Sun Street to Tewkesbury Abbey for the Civic Service, before dashing back to Tewkesbury School for the course concluding concert!

Another sad goodbye
On 22nd September the Band sadly bid farewell to one of its most dedicated members over the past 5 years, Sarah-Jane McRorie. Sarah-Jane leaves us to experience the wonder of university life in Bristol. She has been one of the most regular attendees during her time with the Band and will be sadly missed. In 2004 she won the Band elected 'Member of the Year' award. On Sunday we presented her with a special gift for her to remember us by! We wish her good luck in all she does and hope to see her back at Christmas.
A Musical Hundred
The Band visited Ryall Nursing Home on the evening of Tuesday 17th September to provide a musical surprise for the grandmother of one of the Band members, Martin Cullwick, on the occasion of her 100th birthday. In keeping with the occasion the Band played a selection of popular tunes from the past 100 years. First up was 'Congratulations', this was followed by 'The Anniversary Waltz' the the great-grandson of the birthday girl (George Cullwick) stepped forward to play the Eb Bass solo 'The Hippopotamus Song'. Next there was a sing-a-long to 'Florrie Forde's Favourites' before the big band finish with 'Glen Miller Special'. There was, of course, also a rousing rendition of 'Happy Birthday'!
Battle of Britain Parade
On Sunday 15th September the Band once again led a contingent from RAFA and members of the ATC in the annual Battle of Britain Parade through Tewkesbury from Sun Street to the Abbey lawns. The Parade was followed by a short outdoor service led by Revd Paul Williams, before the return march to Sun Street with the taking of a salute as the parade passed the mayor at the Town Hall.
Summer Bandstand Season Comes To A
We had a busy summer bandstand season, especially during August where the Band were busy on three out of four weekends with the other weekend seeing the Training Band go on tour to Sidmouth!
Unfortunately the weather during August was not as glorious as it had been during July. Even wit the changeable weather we had good audiences for our appearances at the bandstands in Worcester Gheluvelt Park, Malvern and Stroud. Our first appearance at the new bandstand in Ross-on-Wye suffered from quite a few heavy showers, but a few hardy British people sat under their umbrellas listening!
At all these venues the audience gave us good feedback and had enjoyable afternoons listening to a variety of light concert items including 'The Essential Joseph', 'Buster Strikes Back' (featuring William Norman), Beethoven's 'Romance', a selection from 'Oliver!', 'Marching Onward', 'Amazing Grace', 'You Raise Me Up', 'As if I Never Said Goodbye' (featuring Clive Miles), 'Spanish Trumpets' (featuring Robin Purser and George Raggatt), 'Blaydon Races' (featuring Martin Warner) and 'Frolic for Trombones'.
You'll be pleased to know that we have finally got round to updating the website and filling in the gaps that have been missed out in the recent busy months for us. Keep taking a look back at June, July and August over the next couple of weeks and see the additions to the archives!
|September has seen several new faces
around the bandroom. In the Senior Band we have been joined by Mandy on 2nd
Cornet. Mandy played the Trumpet with a marching band whilst at school,
and having missed her playing over the past few years has decided to
pick up an instrument again and make music.
The Gloucestershire Echo ran several articles at the beginning of September making reference to the Band which have led to a number of people also enquiring about our Training Band. We would like to say a big thank you to the Echo for encouraging seven people to phone up in just one weekend asking to learn or join!
